The Kansas City Southern Railway

With a line that runs across the northern United States and into Mexico, KCS is the first single-line railway to connect three of North America's countries. But it wasn't always as that.

KCSR has its roots in 1887, when Arthur Stilwell, Edward L. Martin and others founded the Kansas City Suburban Belt Railway. This railway served suburban and riverside industrial and commercial districts in downtown Kansas City. Stilwell, an entrepreneur of the railroad who also built lines between New Orleans Shreveport, traces its beginnings to 1887.

In the mid-1990s, several massive rail mergers threatened KCSR's viability. Michael Haverty, the CEO of KCSR, reaffirmed Stilwell’s vision and began pushing for the company to expand into Mexico. The move was made possible through the creation of NAFTA in 1994 and subsequent changes in North American shipping patterns.

In 2021, KCS shareholders approved the transfer of the railroad to Canadian Pacific (CP). The deal was completed in April 2023. The two railroads merged into CPKC. 7,300 miles of KCS and 15,000 miles of CP lines created a single north-south freight route across the continent. The merger is the largest railroad merger in history. CPKC is located in Kansas City. The Holiday Express is pulled by the KCSR's F units which are coveted catch trains. The train raises money for Salvation Army by visiting communities across KCSR's U.S. Network. The pandemic caused the suspension of the event in 2020, but with vaccines coming soon, it's possible the Holiday Express can return next year.

Employees
